Wavecom Names AIRDESK As First U.S. Distributor for GPRS/GSM ModemSAN DIEGO, CA - August 27, 2001 - Wavecom, Inc., subsidiary of Wavecom SA - France, (NASDAQ: WVCM; Nouveau Marché: WAVECOM), today announced the appointment of AIRDESK, Inc., the first distributor for its GSM/GPRS Modems in the US. Wavecom develops a complete line of wireless standard modules (WISMOTM) and modems for GSM (Global System for Mobile) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) platforms and currently building alliances for its product line in North and South America. "We believe this partnership will enable developers of new wireless applications in the telemetry, automotive and telephony markets to integrate fully certified and FTA/FCC approved modems into vertical applications," said Hany Neoman, Wavecom's chief operating officer. "Our eight years of experience as a GSM and GPRS solutions developer in Europe and Asia enables us to take advantage of the growing demand for GSM/GPRS technologies in the US, Canada and South America as we develop more partnerships in the near future." "With Wavecom as a partner, we can offer our clients access to a proven leader in GSM/GPRS technology," said Michael W. Lang, president and CEO of AIRDESK. "Wavecom's already formed alliances with key wireless players such as Trimble, Handspring and AMD, so we're proud to be their first distributor in the U.S." More than 70 percent of the world's wireless networks are GSM based, including all of Europe and much of Asia. With 10 million subscribers, GSM is rapidly gaining ground in the fragmented U.S. market. Integrated GSM/GPRS solutions, such as Wismo, provide US manufactures with a cost effective and fast access to wireless applications not only in US but also in the vast worldwide markets. A highly anticipated wireless technology standard, GPRS is expected to improve data services that can readily be added to GSM-based communications. GPRS, which is expected to be widely available in North and South America from GSM operators in the third quarter this year, facilitates instant connections so information can be sent or received immediately. The information is split into separate but related "packets" before being transmitted and reassembled at the receiving end. GPRS can enable data transmission speeds up to 10 times as fast as current networks. No dial-up modem connection is necessary, resulting in an "always on" Internet connection at a much-reduced cost than other fragmented technologies. GPRS is the stepping-stone to 3G (third generation) wireless technology, which will offer even faster data and streaming video transmission toward the middle of the decade.
